A Leftist Millionaire Might Fund Associated Press Climate Change Reporting!!!
According to Axios, James Murdoch, the son of billionaire media mogul Rupert Murdoch, and his wife Kathryn are close to an agreement to establish an Associated Press climate reporting branch.
According to two sources familiar with the talks, the Murdochs will make a multimillion-dollar investment in the Associated Press as part of the arrangement. The funds will be used to establish a new Associated Press climate reporting center, which will employ 20 reporters.
According to Axios, the new climate branch at the AP would apparently have other contributors in addition to the Murdochs. The Quadrivium Foundation, which James and Kathryn Murdoch co-founded in 2014, will make their investment.
On its website, the group notes, "We look for programs that address the core causes of problems and where single acts can result in several beneficial consequences." "We place a higher value on the potential for long-term influence than on safe investments. And we look for instances where our investment or leadership can have a significant impact.”
"The Foundation's current target areas include Democracy, Technology and Society, Scientific Understanding, Climate Change, and Ocean Health," they stated.
According to data from the Center for Responsive Politics, Quadrivium was active in recent federal elections, giving millions of dollars to progressive groups and candidates. According to tax filings released by CNBC, the Murdochs contributed $100 million to the organization in 2019, although it is unknown how much was given out during the 2020 election.
In 2020, James and Kathryn Murdoch each gave $20 million to President Joe Biden's campaign and progressive political organizations.
According to its "standards" documentation, the AP has previously received funds from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Google Digital News Initiative, Ida B. Wells Society, and International Women's Media Foundation.
"The Associated Press recognizes that collaborating with the proper groups may assist our newsroom in achieving our journalistic objectives," the wire service said. "This may be a foundation that provides financing for greater coverage or another media source with complementary expertise to ours."
The outlet has pledged to work with outside organizations in an entirely independent manner, and has stated that it will never take grants that require "pre-publication vetting of stories or attempts to influence coverage."
In a statement to the Daily Caller News Foundation, AP spokesperson Lauren Easton said, "Factual coverage of climate change is vital to AP's broader news mission, and expanding that work is something we continue to explore."
Easton didn't respond specifically to the Axios claim, but he did say that when the AP collaborates with outside entities, it preserves its editorial independence.
James Murdoch resigned from the board of his father's firm, News Corp, which owns Fox News, in 2020. In a letter, he stated that his departure was due to "disagreements about specific editorial items released."
The Murdochs' spokeswoman declined to comment.
